I found that the New England Patriots are not using Instagram very consistently, and this should worry them because their competitor, the Eagles, are doing a much better job on Instagram. Here are three reasons why the Patriots are falling behind on the social media field:

The Patriots do not post on weekends during the off-season

During the off-season, the Patriots are not posting on weekends. According to Sprout Social, the best times to post on Instagram is from Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m – 3 p.m. Even though this is true, it is still important to post on weekends to keep your followers engaged all week. During the season, the Patriots are posting a few times during the week and once during the weekend. The Patriots are in the off season, so they should be especially consistent with how much they post during the off-season.

In this screenshot, the post on the right was from February 9, and then the next post was the center picture which was posted on February 14. They did not post for four days and did not post on the weekend.

The Patriots are not even posting once a day during the off-season. Sometimes they are skipping days or even a few days. As an Instagram lover, (someone who spends hours a day on the Instagram platform) I do not want to only see the same brands posting everyday or see spam of manys posts from one brand. However, posting once a day and maybe skipping one day a week is perfect. Brands should not be skipping multiple days during the off-season, while they are posting every day constantly during the season.

The Patriots do not post aesthetically pleasing pictures

Being that the Patriots are a sports team, they should not only be posting game-day pictures to engage their following, but they should also be posting interesting sports updates about the NFL and the Patriots, engaging ways to promote apparel and upcoming games, and posting throwback pictures from players. They can provide this content in many ways, including how the Eagles are diversifying their content. In my last post, I showed a few different posts the Eagles used to engage followers. They use drawings from local artists to hype up upcoming games and celebrate previous wins. This content creates a positive change from typical team posts that they typically post everyday.

Another way to engage fans is to use the Instagram Shopping Tag feature to promote and sell apparel and other products the Patriots sell. According to SocialMediaToday, “Instagram also notes that more than 200 million of the platform’s daily users visit at least one business profile in the app every day, underlining the opportunity for their advanced eCommerce capacity.” This is a great opportunity for the Patriots to link jerseys, hats, mugs, t-shirts, and many other apparel players and fans wear.

This was an Instagram post posted on December 12, 2019 that the Patriots could have tagged the Christmas hat if fans wanted to buy it, but they did not.

The Patriots are not as personable as the Eagles, they are more professional

Instagram is a platform that should be fun and more laid back compared to other social media platforms. According to SocialInsider, the second step to boost Instagram engagement is to add some fun to your posts. The Patriots are more professional on instagram when they should post more engaging fun posts and stories. The Eagles post every Wednesday on their story a “Wallpaper Wednesday” with a few possible wallpapers of high quality pictures of players and coaches. This is just one way the Patriots can make their account more fun for their followers.

The Eagles also post Q&A’s on their Instagram stories that followers can ask any questions to the team about and players will answer them. The Patriots can do easy and fun ideas like this to add engagement to their profile.

From talking with my classmate, Brandon, who audited the Patriots’ Instagram, we both agreed that the Eagles win overall for the best content on this platform.
